More Ammunition for a Parenting License

Police: Children Lived in Filth

Why do we let things like this happen and THEN react to them instead of trying to prevent them in the first place?

Seriously...we need a license to drive a car, run a business, and own a dog, yet we don't need any certification whatsoever to raise children. Do we care more about the welfare and living conditions of dogs than we do our children?

These kids will grow up and join society one day...we owe it to them to ensure their parents, or whoever is going to care for them, are fit and willing to do the task. Certification that the parents are reasonably responsible doesn't seem like an undue burden to me...after all, these kids' very lives are on the line.

I agree with the point of this post.

However it would be almost impossible to actually license people to be parents. It would be too intrusive.

Remember the pro- choice movement? "Government doesn't have the right to tell women what to do with their own body."

Looks like we'll just have to deal with it. Always going to be despicable people out there.

Ohmz: I wasn't clear, I think. I don't mean that we would license the act of having (i.e., making) children. You're right...that would be next to impossible, even if people thought it was a good idea (which they won't).

What I'm talking about is creating a license to keep any children you produce. Adoptive parents and foster parents (usually) must pass a stringent set of criteria before they're permitted to take in children. Why not natural parents?

For example, a 19-year-old crack addict gets pregnant. Within 30 days of giving birth, she's required to pass a free parental certification test. If she does not pass the test, she isn't permitted to keep the child beyond 30 days and must give it up to adoptive services. Alternately, she could take the test while pregnant and get it out of the way. Of course, there would be accommodation for health issues and other circumstances, but the general goal is to ensure that everyone caring for a child is fit to do so.

Oh ok! Now I get it!

I agree with you then. It should be done. Although I can hear the cries now from all the zealots out there.

Btw, when I try to sign in with my TypeKey account I get this:

"The site you're trying to comment on has not signed up for this feature. Please inform the site owner."

P.S. I enjoy your Twitter updates!

Ohmz: Thanks for letting me know about the TypeKey issue...will look into it. :-)
