I'm the last person to direct people to Best Buy usually, but there's a particularly good deal there right now: a 500 GB Western Digital My Book Essential Edition USB 2.0 external hard drive (pictured) on sale now for $199.99.
That's only $0.40 per gig, which is hard to beat right now on external drives. And so far, this one's fairly quiet and runs reasonably cool (plus, the all-black case looks pretty sweet on top of my Antec TX 640B :-).
Oooh - thanks for the tip! I need a good external backup HD.
I wish it came with some decent backup software...

Chris,
For backup, I've been using "Second Copy" by Centered Systems for a long time now and I've yet to be let down (and it's saved my bacon countless times). Check out http://www.secondcopy.com/ for more info -- I think $29.95 is a bargain for what it does, as I've not seen a backup system that is both more flexible and as easy to use.
Looks like a nice program, but I am pretty much full-time Mac now. Any thoughts there?

Nope...sorry, Chris...don't own any Macs. :-/
For the mac, you can't beat getting a LaCie drive. They come in 1394 and USB2 varieties, and comes bundled with some capable backup software for OSX. With some tweaking, you can easily make bootable backups with nothing more than what is in the box.
