I've always been a fan of nuclear energy. It now seems that Wired is as well:
"Burning hydrocarbons is a luxury that a planet with 6 billion energy-hungry souls can't afford. There's only one sane, practical alternative: nuclear power. We now know that the risks of splitting atoms pale beside the dreadful toll exacted by fossil fuels. Radiation containment, waste disposal, and nuclear weapons proliferation are manageable problems in a way that global warming is not. Unlike the usual green alternatives - water, wind, solar, and biomass - nuclear energy is here, now, in industrial quantities. Sure, nuke plants are expensive to build - upward of $2 billion apiece - but they start to look cheap when you factor in the true cost to people and the planet of burning fossil fuels. And nuclear is our best hope for cleanly and efficiently generating hydrogen, which would end our other ugly hydrocarbon addiction - dependence on gasoline and diesel for transport."
Yes, there are things we have to worry about, but Watt-for-Watt, nuclear is far better for the planet than any other large-scale energy source currently available to us. Well, that is until someone delivers me the Mr. Fusion I ordered back in 1987.

nuclear energy is a horrible idea!! it causes birth defects on all pregnant women and the radiation from them causes all kinds of cancer! why should we build something soo expensive that will only kill us?! If you ask me, I say it is simply not worth the risk!
there is only a slight chance that radiation from a nuclear power plant would cause cancer, there are infact some plants that have nature reserves right next door so personaly i think that its not all bad. but then again the waste products and the cost, is just another problem. and for birth defects? that would only be if you were exposed to high amounts of radiation whitch is very unlikly. so yeh im doing a case study on it for my GCSEs so yeh im learning ^^
im doin research for my gcse's and i want some help i think nuclear power plants are a bad idea an i have my reasons i want someone give me a good argument why they are :D thankyou
Nuclear Power is an incredible opportunity for the world to combat climate change and provide an incredible amount of clean energy. As for all those people out there that are worried about proliferation, its not that simple. There isnt any plutonium sitting in briefcases under someones desk (like in Back to the Future). Terrorists arent simply going to waltz in and leave with their ready made bomb material. And as for people like comment number one up there, the radiation risk is incredibly, astoundingly low. I would feel comfortable living inside the control room of a plant, that's how safe they are. You'll actually receive more radiation standing next to a traditional coal fired plant then near a nuclear reactor. No joke. Have no fear, nuclear reactors are nothing like "The Simpsons" show them.
wow
