iRiver Discman-Style Media Player

iriver-discman.jpg

Multimedia device maker iRiver has announced an interesting new media player, the iMP-1100.

The new media player, successor to the iRiver iMP-1000, has the format of a discman-type player, and sports a 2" TFT colour display. This is admittedly a small screen compared to other media players, but the first for portable media players is the additional ability to play from CD.

The iMP-1100 is compatible with DivX, MPEG4, MP3, WMA, ASF and CD-DA file formats.

iRiver has scheduled release of the player for late May to June 2004.

What's the point?

The only way portable video will work if you can effortlessly transfer TV shows to the gadget. Right now, you have to manually digitize in 1:1 real time, then compress, then download. Too much work and time to watch the latest episode of "Alias" on the go.

There needs to be a transparent way -- like iTunes - to dock your video player with your Tivo and have it dump video files onto it.

unicron,
Its a CD based device...thats 650 megs of Divx goodness.
thats 10 episodes of dora the explorer for my son.
yes, you have to convert and burn,
(or thanks to kazaa, download and burn)
but thats it...once you have CD full of video,
you can just burn and replace it with fresh stuff!

when the Hard Drive based players come out,
that's when the Syncing will be necessary.
I love Iriver products since I had their first mp3CD player. if this is $100-150, I'll totally buy it.

This is great.. Not so much for the cd part, but a portable device that accepts divx... I can't wait till there is a hard drive version for it..

And something that has composite out.
that way I can take my movies with me..
