GearBits Celebrates First Birthday

A year ago today, I posted the first entry at GearBits, a new blog mostly about my love of technology. It was born of my desire to share my experiences and opinions with others and start a dialogue. Along the way, I invited some close friends -- Ken, Mitch, and Sam -- to join me in writing down what they thought was interesting.

Well, it's now a year later and the site is still going. I guess there's something to be said for sheer stubbornness. The graph below shows what kind of ride it's been so far -- since I started keeping traffic stats back last July, visitations to the site has grown quite a bit.

As you can see, in the middle of last summer (2003), we welcomed under 100 different readers each week. Now, that number has grown a hundred-fold. Hopefully, that's a sign that we're providing some useful, interesting, or provocative reading (an alternate explanation is that there are just a lot more search bots combing and cataloguing the web).

Either way, thanks for a great first 12 months. In the brief time we've been around, we've made 556 posts and you all have added 1,230 comments. Please let us know what you like and what you don't and we'll try to do more of the former and less of the latter. We're looking forward to another great year!

So, how do we contact you with ideas, suggestions, news tips, etc? I'd love to send some stuff your way occasionally - and I read your site religiously! Thank you! And yes, T-Mobile is awesome - I switched to them a while back and they're just amazing!

Ben, post a comment -- we read them all!

For now, that's the best mechanism we have, but I'd like to figure out a way to enable reader-contributed stories (a la /.).

I was doing a search on Samsung DLP HDTV's and came across your site. Craig, thanks for your comments about this product. I saw it at a home show and was quite taken back by the quality of picture but the price was more than what I expected. So I went to a local independent TV dealer who viewed the Samsung as the Hyundai among the BMW's. He suggested the LG model(zenith?). I figure that a guy of your caliber wouldn't buy junk. I'm thinking about the 56" that will be available soon.

Jim,
It sounds like your dealer is still holding onto prejudices of a decade or so ago.

Samsung has really made incredible leaps forward in terms of product quality and using cutting-edge technology. They are one of the leaders in LCD production and are closing in on Sony as the highest-sales producer of consumer electronics.

Think of Samsung today versus Samsung a decade ago much like Honda in 1995 versus Honda in 1980...a world's difference.

Hello Gearbits!

I love the site - its great.. I too am at the same starting position as you were a year ago with my blog http://nechbi.com. I too love gadgets and new technology. Maybe I'll have as much success as you have..

Kind Regards,
