A perfect road warrior combo: Thinkpad, Sony Ericsson T610, and T-mobile GPRS

Well, I'm back. It's been so hectic last few weeks that my submission to this site has almost been nonexistent. Anyway, during the last few weeks, I have been been house hunting here at Cincinnati and been to Las Vegas and Grand Canyon for about a week . Well, we finally came back from LV, and the seller accepted our offer while we were on our trip. So, things have been settling here somewhat.

Anyway, I want to report on my experience using the above combination in my latest trip. The hotel we were staying didn't have the broadband connection, and I was using my Tungsten T3 and SE T610. Then it dawned on me that my latest Thinkpad also has the Bluetooth connection. So, I should be able to connect to the T-mobile's GPRS network using my Thinkpad. To my surprise, the setup was a breeze (just turn on your Bluetooth and create a dial-up networking connection using the T610), and I was able to get 115.2kbps connection speed--it wasn't broadband fast, but still acceptable for browsing most websites and downloading my e-mails. I got connection almost every time I tried during my trip. The unlimited GPRS plan I have really got a workout this past week (sometimes I would be on for several hours straight without any interruption), and I'm so glad that I have that service.

So, if you are traveling, check out this combo for your wireless solution.

I love that combination, only I use a ThinkPad with built-in BT, but the SE t610 and T3 also. It's awesome. Works just about everywhere. It's fast enough for doing what I need to do when I use it. Great service.

T-Mobile, Nokia 3650, Tungsten T3, and a Mac TiBook G4 with BT Dongle. Great experience from Home to the Airport to the Hotel and back again!

Great to hear that others have similar setups. I'm glad that my Thinkpad came with BT built-in. I'm surprised that BT folks haven't done much to advertise the advantage of having such a setup.

Exactly how does one set up the 'dial-up networking' connection from WinXP to the T-mobile gprs service on the SE t610?

You need to set up a dial up networking connection. No need to put user name or password. Just put *99# in the number section. Of course, you need to set up the dial-up networking to connect to Bluetooth modem in your Thinkpad.

Yes, I'm glad to see all of you using the thinkpad and bluetooth. That's great!. I'm using a Dell laptop with a motorola v400 thru Cingular.
My webcam is a logitech. I can use the network thru msn messenger for live streaming, but at 115kbps, the bandwith only allows a frame every second or two. I need to know how to set it up to live stream to my website so anybody could punch up my web address and see me (or the road, if I have the camera pointed that way) COOL!
Does Anybody have any thoughts on how to have it streaming thru my web site?

nice to see other people using this type of solution. i've been using a TT and t68i on ATT since they went GSM. i've upgraded my Vaio TR1AP to have btooth and have been using a similar setup. i can ususally get most important communications done on the palm (while on the go) but have to sit down and pull out the vaio when i have to review MRI data.

I use a similar set up - T-Mobile SE T610, Apple PowerBook G4 Aluminum and an iPAQ 2215. Great when there isn't a decent broadband connection around.
