Making GearBits Better
So, GearBits has been up and running for a few months now and the response has been pretty terrific. Hundreds of comments have been left and thousands of readers every week stop by.
So, how can we make this site better? Are there any layout improvements we can make? Are there any editorial or content changes that you'd like to see? Other suggestions?
One small change I just made was to add the number of entries in each category to the list of categories (to the left). Is that useful, or was it better before?
Help us improve this site and make it better -- leave us a comment (below) and tell us what you'd like to see. Thanks.
- Craig
Not sure if I'm allowed to comment here, but is there any use in a "headlines" section so readers can see at a glance what's new?
Posted by Sam at October 11, 2003 11:02 AMYes, I'm not sure if we can comment here as well, but I would like to see if we can have a section called "Hot Topics" (or something like this) to draw our readers to past or current articles that are popular or important.

Posted by ken at October 11, 2003 06:53 PMWhy don't you guys email me privately with more detail about what you'd like to see, hmm? ;-)
Posted by Craig at October 12, 2003 11:15 AMThanks for doing an rss feed, but how about doing specific feeds for your categories? A lot of what you do isn't of any interest to me (and I don't mean it isn't good stuff, just that it's not stuff I care about) , but certain parts (like the computer section) absolutely are.
That's a great idea, Tony. Thanks!
Posted by Craig at October 14, 2003 08:55 AMThis comment may be sort of like the "straight-ahead" signal on a car. But I like the way GearBits is right now.
I'm very interested in digital photography. But I like the updates on everything else too.
It's good to be well-rounded.
Posted by Ron Capek at October 14, 2003 03:23 PMThanks, Ron. I don't think we're considering any content changes, mostly layout of the website and related features (like RSS feeds and stuff). But it's good to know you like what you read. :-)
Posted by Craig at October 14, 2003 10:53 PMThe font you have chosen is easy on the eye when seen on paper; it's less so on a computer screen, which is effectively much larger to the eye. A more compressed font would be easier to read (a good example would be the Washington Post website).
The content is great--keep it up!
